5 Top Tips for a memorable newborn photoshoot in Gloucester
newborn photoshoot at home
I have been dying to have a chat about how to prepare for an in-home newborn session, there’s just something so special about capturing those early days at home. Over the years, I’ve had the joy of photographing families as they grow, capturing some of life’s sweetest milestones in the comfort of their own space. In this post I’ll share some top tips on how to prepare for your shoot, whether it’s your first baby or a new addition to the family, these tips will help you make the most of these fleeting moments.
Here are some tips to help make your session as smooth as possible:
Find the Perfect Spot of Natural Light
When you're gearing up for your newborn photoshoot, let's talk about how the right lighting can make a huge difference in the quality of your photos! Hunt for that golden spot in your home that's soaking in all that glorious natural light. Natural light is like your BFF in photos – it's soft, it's flattering, and it gives off that dreamy glow that's just chef's kiss. Consider areas near large windows or doors where the sunlight is streaming in gently. If you're unsure about where the best lighting conditions are, don't hesitate to take photos and consult with your photographer for recommendations on the best spot.
Embrace those moments of wakefulness
I'm not counting on your baby to sleep, if they do, great! If not, that's OK too. Please don't worry if your baby doesn't sleep during the session. While many parents hope for their newborn to sleep peacefully during a photoshoot, wakeful moments can be equally as precious and authentic. Babies' natural curiosity and expressions when awake can offer candid and heartwarming captures of their emerging personalities, and sometimes they pull the funniest little faces, which I absolutely adore. The little puckered lips, the frowny little faces, the wide eyed stares.
Who needs sleep when there’s so much to see!
Create a Calm Environment
Setting the right mood is essential for a relaxed session. Create a calming and soothing environment by playing your favourite chilled playlist, or perhaps using a white noise machine to help create a serene atmosphere for your little one. The gentle background music or white noise can help soothe both your baby and the entire family, setting the tone for a peaceful and enjoyable session.
Include Siblings in the Fun
If the newborn has older siblings, involving them in the session can create some truly heartwarming and memorable moments. Encourage them to interact with the baby in loving ways, such as sharing kisses, holding hands, or simply being present in the photos.
Declutter and Relax
While it's natural to want your home to look perfect for the photoshoot, remember that the focus is on capturing the beauty of your family and the new addition. Instead of stressing about tidying up every corner, focus on decluttering small areas that will be in the frame. Clearing off bedside tables, removing unnecessary items from the background, and creating a clean space around the main photo areas can help. Trust me when I say I've been a new mum, so I completely understand having a spotless house is low down on the agenda in those early postpartum days. I can work around any remaining clutter, and can adjust the setup and move any items I need to to create the perfect space for the photos.
